Sustainable Gift Wrapping.

Unwrapping a gift is definitely half the fun of receiving one … but unfortunately this love we have to cover things in paper, ribbons and all things pretty, comes at a cost to our planet.

But the good news is, there are many ways you can still have fun with wrapping gifts without hurting the environment. It just takes a little creative thinking and little pushing of the boundaries! But I’m game if you are!

Here are five alternatives to consider this Christmas:
  1. Newspaper. Yep, good old newspaper … it’s a very cost effective way to wrap up gifts at Christmas time plus it puts all those unwanted newspapers to good use! Just make sure to check what news story you have on the front and top of your parcel … no one wants a tragic event on top of their Christmas Gift! So filter your selection carefully. You can also add some simple embellishments to the wrapped gifts, things such as twine, odd buttons, flowers, twigs, gumnuts … anything you have lying around the house or in the garden. Anything you can repurpose and use to add a little flair to your sustainable wrapping.
  2. Children’s Art Work. This is a really great way to show case your child’s love for art and show them that you are proud of their achievements. Art makes such beautiful wrapping and really adds a lovely personal touch. You can be guaranteed no one else will have the same!
  3. Tea Towels. Wrapping gifts, especially those for the kitchen, in a tea towel, not only saves on paper but it adds a gorgeous touch to the overall gift. It’ll be unique and you’ll be sure to impress the recipient by not leaving them with a lot of crumbled paper to dispose of!
  4. Pillow Cases. These make a fantastic Santa Sack … and can of course be used as a Pillow case afterwards. Zero waste is the goal, and creating a Santa Sack out of something that can be used on an ongoing basis and in a practical way, ticks a whole lot of boxes for me!
  5. Baskets. This one has to be my favourite because it involves hitting the Op Shops! There are so many Baskets to be found at the Op Shops, in all different shapes and sizes … and they are fantastic for gifting Baked Goods, Creating Hampers, or making Gift Packs. Plus they can be re-used again and again!

There are so many ways we can get creative with our gift wrapping. It does take some forward planning and some thinking sideways … but it’s lots of fun! Get Creative this Christmas and see what you can come up with!

Merry Christmas!
